An Okaloosa County Sheriff’s deputy was taking a Destin DUI suspect to booking who’d been driving eastbound in westbound lanes Sunday night when she was nearly hit by another drunk driver, who was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes on Okaloosa Island.
The first incident started around 11 p.m. when the deputy was almost hit by a car driven by 83-year old William Andrew Cimbalo of Destin. Cimbalo was driving in the wrong lanes on Emerald Coast Parkway, according to a press release from the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies say Cimbalo had a distinct odor of alcohol on his breath. He was arrested for driving under the influence after failing a Field Sobriety Test. His blood alcohol content later tested at .160/.151.
While a deputy was transporting Cimbalo to booking around midnight, she was nearly hit by someone driving a Jeep Wrangler eastbound in the westbound lanes on Okaloosa Island.
Deputies pulled over the car and the driver said he did not know he was driving on the wrong side of the highway.
Following an investigation and field sobriety test, 39-year old Charles Stanley Lauderdale of Destin was also charged with DUI. In addition, he was issued a citation for driving on the wrong side of the roadway. Lauderdale refused to provide the deputy with a breath sample.
No injuries were reported.
