The Destin Library reaches a milestone on Saint Patrick's Day. The library officially closes the book on its first decade and turns 10-years-old on March 17.

Located at 150 Sibert Avenue, the library opened under soggy conditions.

"It was pouring," said library director Jurate Burns. "But we had 820 people come to the library on that first day of business."

Ten years later, the library staff is hoping for sunny skies as it launches a week-long celebration. The fun begins on Monday, where the library invites everyone out for their Customer Appreciation Day.

Taking place throughout the day, the library is asking for your feedback. Providing "Shamrock Surveys," Burns and the other library staff want to know what the community thinks about the library.

"How have we done over the past 10 years? How can we improve over the next 10 years?" asks Burns.

In addition to surveys, Monday will also feature raffles, gift baskets and treats as a thank you for the community’s continued support.

Tuesday is about celebrating the many programs offered at the Destin Library. According to Burns, all of the libraries programs are free, but they occasionally ask for donations.

Tuesday will focus largely on the library's Foreign Film Night. The French film "The Queens of Hearts," will be shown from 7 to 9 p.m. Door prizes will also be provided Tuesday.

Wednesday is all about the volunteers. Beginning at 11:30 a.m., the library will host a special invitation-only luncheon celebrating the many volunteers of the Destin Library.

Thursday will celebrate the library's services, including the free tax preparation offered by the AARP and the JobsPlus One-Stop Mobile Career Center. Both programs are completely free and open to anyone with a valid library card. Other free services offered by the Destin Library are Rocket Languages, Ancestry.com, HeritageQuest.com, and services geared toward high school students preparing to take the ACT or SAT's.

Friday will celebrate the members of the Destin Garden Club. Hosted by members of the garden club, tours will begin at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Friday.

The members will share history of the many different plants and flowers within the gardens of the library, including the maintenance required for the plants within the gardens. For more information on the Destin Library call 837-8572.
