35 years ago 1978



A crowd of 350 gathered at the Shoreline Towers recreation center to see Kris Adamson crowned Miss Destin Rodeo 1978 and Cynthia Kitchen named Little Miss Destin Rodeo.



Almost 200 youngsters took part in the Destin Little League opening ceremonies. There were 15 teams participating.



The Destin Community Center Board worked to complete the road inside the Destin Cemetery so pallbearers would not have to carry the caskets long distances to grave sites.



 



30 years ago 1983



Contingent upon their budget request being approved by the Legislature, state Department of Natural Resources officials hoped to see a master plan for Henderson Beach State Recreation Area by early 1984.



The Destin Chamber of Commerce reported the last two weeks of March were record-breaking for getting the word out about Destin, with information sent to 591 people in 39 states.



Members of First Presbyterian Church of Destin held a welcoming tea for their new minister, the Rev. John Parks.



The Coast Guard was considering a change in policy that would limit non-emergency search and rescue missions, and many Destin area boaters agreed with the proposed change.



 



25 years ago 1988



Heavy spring rains brought complaints of severe flooding from residents in several areas of Destin.



The Destin Planning Commission debated how much power should be delegated to a proposed construction standards board.



The city of Destin tackled noise problems from outdoor bands and worked on getting land near the Little League park for overflow parking.



 



20 years ago 1993



First-time cobia fisherman, Houston Wood of Nashville, hauled in a 75.4-pound cobia to take top honors in the Crab Cruncher Classic, a world championship cobia tournament.



Capt. Frank Helton of the Ididit won the High Hook cash award at the Crab Cruncher Classic for pulling in six cobia for a total weight of 205.4 pounds.



More than 50 friends and family turned out at Harbor Docks to welcome home Jim Lamarque who had been held hostage in the Venezuelan jungle for 35 days by drug dealers.



The city of Destin sponsored a one-mile Fun Run for youngsters in grades 2-5 and a half-mile Fun Run for children grades K-1.
Mattie M. Kelly Fine Arts Center offers invitation to Emerald Coast YMCA to build a combination arts center and recreation facility on part of the center's deeded property east of Destin.



Strawberries 78 cents a pint and ice-cream $1.29 for a half-gallon at Winn Dixie.



Rip Gilchrist of Graysville, Ala, pulled in an 87.6-pound cobia on Capt. Kelly Windes' Sunrise to take the lead in the Destin Annual Cobia Tournament.



Rough seas and high winds contributed to the sinking of a 16-foot pleasure craft about 3/4-mile off Crystal Beach.
