It put up quite a fight, but the anglers won out.

A group of fishermen aboard the Lady Em with Capt. Mike Eller reeled in a 216-pound swordfish last week while on a three-day fishing trip.

"It whipped all five customers ... twice," Capt. Eller said.

Fishing in 1,400 feet of water near the Spur, they tossed out a Spanish mackerel for bait.

The fish took the bait right away.

"It never made a big run," he said. "We thought it was a shark at first. It was just a hard pull ... it wouldn't budge."

They hooked the swordfish about midnight and struggled with it until 3 in the morning.

"Toward the end of the fight it came to the surface and jumped," Eller said, noting that's when they knew it was a swordfish.

The swordfish was just the icing on the cake of the three-day trip.

Eller said they bottom fished the first day and pulled in several grouper. The next day was spent reeling in yellowfin tuna.
