Florida Democratic Party Chairwoman Allison Tant will be in Destin Saturday for a fundraising event at Harbor Docks.

"We are inviting people out to come and meet our new chairwoman," said John Whitley, Florida Democratic Party State Committeeman for Okaloosa County. "She's very talented and a very hard worker."

Tant, who was elected as chairwoman earlier this year, will be speaking to fellow Democrats at the event which will be from 5-7 p.m. and will raise funds for the Okaloosa Democratic Executive Committee.

Known as a heavily saturated Republican area, Whitley said the local Democrats have been working hard throughout Okaloosa County to make their mark. According to the Okaloosa County Supervisor of Elections Office's website, there are 72,794 active registered Republicans in Okaloosa County, compared to 26,098 Democrats.

"We've made a strong effort here in Okaloosa County to register new Democrats," he said. "We've put our hearts and souls into this."

On average, Whitley said they are registering roughly 1,400 new Democratic voters annually. He said that number fluctuates during presidential election cycles.

"It's definitely the younger base we are reaching," he said.

Saturday's event is open to the public, but organizers are asking for a minimum donation of $25 to help cover the cost of food. Harbor Docks is located at 538 Harbor Boulevard.
