About 30 youth got an early start on the Memorial Day weekend Thursday afternoon with a fishing trip aboard the New Florida Girl's American Spirit party boat.
Destin Middle School teacher Terry Gulledge, along with 27 students from the Fishing Club, boarded the Spirit Thursday at 2 p.m. for a four-hour fishing trip with Capt. Jim Green and crew. About 14 parents or chaperones also went along for the fishing expedition.
"I want to catch anything big," said Beck Holahan.
As for his buddy Christian Ford he was opting for "anything in season."
Ed Duncan went along on the trip with his son Bryar. It was a first-time trip for both of them on a party boat.
"He just wants to catch some fish," Ed said.
Capt. Jim Westbrook, owner of the American Spirit, said the group could expect to catch vermillion snapper and white snapper and maybe a few triggerfish this time of year.
"They'll have a big time," Westbrook said. "I love to see the little kids go fishing.”
Westbrook has been taking youth fishing from Crestview for the past 20 years as well as students from Niceville.
This was the first time to take students from Destin Middle School.
"It's a local thing; that's what I love," Westbrook said.
