A 113-pound white marlin, one of the biggest caught in Destin, was hooked aboard Jim Dearmon's Alright.



VFW Post 7464 set a memorial wreath afloat at the Destin Coast Guard Station, the first such memorial service of its kind in the area.



Tomi Crofut, nominated by Destin's St. Andrews By-the-Sea, won a seat in the Silver Haired Legislature.



Sandra Jo Brown won the Baby Crawl Contest at the Memorial Day Fun Fair Day at the Destin Community Center.



 



30 years ago 1983



John F. Williams of Santa Rosa Beach was found guilty of first degree murder in the death of Destin resident Ted Schery.



John Gnotek was installed as president of the Destin Rotary Club, and Greg Artabasy was named "Rotarian of the Year."



Nancy Krenkel was installed as president of the Friends Guild of the Destin Library.



 



25 years ago 1988



Noise tests on Holiday Isle revealed it was noisier in the morning than in the evening with two outdoor harborfront bands playing.



Thousands of people and bumper-to-bumper traffic rolled into Destin for the Memorial Day weekend.



Destin Harbor Master Mitch Dudley was asked by the Harbor Board to crack down on people water skiing outside the city's designated ski zone in Destin harbor.



Destin attorney Dana Matthews announced he would run for Robert Harden's District 5 House seat.



 



20 years ago 1993



Monica Trammell was crowned Miss Destin from a group of nine contestants.



Out of a field of 80 or more athletes, local runner Jolly Thornhill was the first to cross the finish line in the Destin 5K Run/Walk for Cystic Fibrosis.



Fryer leg quarters 29 cents a pound, pork spare ribs $1.29 for 10-pound bag, and hot dogs 69 cents for a 12-ounce package at Delchamps for the Memorial Day weekend.



Bed tax collections for March were up 27.884 percent over March of 1992, and collections were up 3 percent overall in 1993 compared to previous year.



 



10 years ago 2003



A 9-foot alligator came ashore in the surf near the Hilton Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort. Officers tracked the alligator as it drifted parallel to the beach, ending near Whale's Tail. Backwoods Alligator Trappers eventually caught the alligator after its six hour journey.



The Sacred Heart-Arvida-Howard Group Charity Golf Classic presented a check for $151,000 to Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast.



Fudpucker's in Destin celebrated the one-year anniversary of its Gator Beach, home to 80 live alligators.
