Under cloudy skies with a light wind and chop on the water, the waves are rolling in at 1-2 feet at the Okaloosa Island Pier Tuesday morning. In the last couple of days, anglers have pulled in bluefish, ladyfish, hardtail, Spanish mackerel, bonito and king mackerel.
Big giant trout from Hogtown Bayou to Destin are being caught in the bay right now, according to Pete Wright at Ship’s Chandler. But big bait is a must to lure in the big trout. The hot ticket-bait is the biggest croakers you can find. There are several reports of redfish being caught around the Mid-Bay and Destin bridges and under the lights at night around the docks. Light tackle and live shrimp work well.
Amberjack, grouper, triggerfish and mingo are being caught on a regular basis. The grouper bite has been good on the inshore and offshore wrecks. Amberjack are good on the southwest edge and mingo and triggerfish are showing up on Mingo Ridge and the south edge. King mackerel and blackfin tuna are picking up near the pass and broken bottom. Offshore, wahoo are showing up on the edges and swordfish near the Spur at night.
