Neither wind, rain nor Tropical Storm Karen stopped the Destin Rodeo Run Sunday morning as almost 150 runners hit the trail in the annual event at the Clement Taylor Park in Destin.

Starting at 8 a.m., the runner lined up at the start on Calhoun Avenue with clouds looming above. About 10 minutes into the 5K event, the clouds opened up and rain started to fall. But the race continued and runners and walkers alike finished in fine fashion.

Matt Hayden, 25, of Kentucky was the first to cross the line in 18 minutes and 43 seconds.

"That was the best I've ever done," said Hayden, who runs 5Ks all the time. "This was a good race."

His best 5K time before Sunday morning was 19:20.

Hayden, who just got into town Saturday on vacation with family, ran the race with his sister, Leigh, and mother, Theresa.

"We were going to be here anyway," Theresa said, so they checked to see if there were any races in town.

As for the rain, it was no problem.

"It wasn't storming," Theresa said. "It was actually refreshing."

Hayden wasn't the only one to meet or set personal goals in Sunday's 5K.

Local businessman and fisherman, Ken Creel ran Sunday's Rodeo Run for the first time. His goal was to finish in under 30 minutes and he crossed the line at 29:30

An older couple, William and Merrilee Beazley of Texas, wanted to walk the event just for fun. However, William said his goal was to finish under an hour. He met the mark as they brought up the rear crossing the line at 54:36 and 54:38.

Following the race, runners and walkers met back at AJ's Seafood & Oyster Bar for the after-race party and awards on the upper deck.

"It was an awesome event, even with the rain," said race director Kimmy Meyers. "I hope to see everybody back next year."
