Celebrating his 85th birthday, Larkin Broom weighed in two or three fish at the 65th annual Destin Fishing Rodeo, but all came up a couple of pounds short of making the board.

Nevertheless, Broom, who was fishing aboard the Destin Princess with Capt. Reid Phillips, was happy to be out on the water.

"I've been fishing out here in this Gulf for 60 years," Broom said standing on the rodeo barge.

"There were only about a half dozen boats when I started fishing here," he said. "I've fished with all the Marlers and with Ronald Gibson."

Broom, who now lives in Andalusia, Ala., said he was raised on the river in Mississippi and loves fishing.

"It keeps you busy."
