To encourage reading over the winter break, teachers at Destin Elementary promised their students a special surprise when they returned to school. Making good on that promise, students got to take a break in the middle of school for some well-deserved playtime with winter-themed activities, such as a "snowball" fight using marshmallows and getting to play in man-made snow from a snowman-shaped machine.

"We really wanted kids to read over the holidays," said new Principal Janet Stein. "We asked them to read a book every single day of their break that's 14 days."

Students from kindergarten to fourth grade logged their books and wrote reports to track their progress. As for the reward, Stein said she wanted do something for the students that would be fun and interactive. The playtime lasted through the afternoon as each grade celebrated separately.

"We hope when it comes to spring and summertime, the students will get excited about reading," she said."
