Gayle Mitchell Lyman



Gayle Mitchell Lyman, a servant of Jesus and her community, died peacefully at home in Destin on Jan. 15, 2014. She was born in Memphis, Tenn., to George and Lorraine Mitchell as the eldest of three daughters.  



Gayle graduated from Whitehaven High School in Memphis and attended Memphis State University.  She was active in attending five year reunions of the Whitehaven Class of 1959 and stayed in close touch with many of her classmates. 



She and Stewart met in Memphis at Grace Methodist Church where they were married. Gayle and Stewart loved travel and she was able to accompany him on many of his business trips. Thru personal pleasure trips and business travel, they had the opportunity to see most of Europe, as well as Japan, China and other countries.



Gayle is survived by Stewart, her husband of 41 years; daughters, Laura Bales (Marvin) of Southaven, Miss. and Lesley Davis of Ballwin, Mo.;  stepsons, Steve Lyman (Debbie) of Dacula,  Ga. and Bert Lyman of Columbus, Ga.;  stepdaughter, Ginny Benedict (Cutts) of Athens, Ga.;  sisters, Linda Gee (Don) of Clinton, Miss.,  Donna Combs (George) of Germantown, Tenn.; and nine grandchildren.



Gayle was a dedicated Christian and served her Lord and Savior in a mighty way, establishing and teaching Bible studies wherever they lived. She served Destin United Methodist Church in leadership positions including being a former president of the UMW and as a member of many other key committees. Gayle also served her community as a volunteer for Sacred Heart Hospital for 11 years and as a member of various committees at Kelly Plantation where they’ve lived since 1998.



Her family looks forward to seeing her many friends at her funeral at 1 p.m. Jan. 18 at Destin United Methodist Church. A reception and visitation will begin prior to the service at 11:30 a.m. at the church.



A private family burial service will be held afterwards. 



In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials in Gayle’s name be given to the Destin Life Center Building Fund and mailed to DUMC, 200 Beach Drive, Destin, FL 32541.
