Donn C. Kalthoff

“Donn,” birth name Donald C. Kalthoff, was born to Anna Bernice (Cox) and Harry William Fredrick Kalthoff in Kansas City, Mo., on July 20, 1926.  He was an only child. He served in World War II in an artillery unit in the Philippines.  He was wounded in the war and returned stateside in 1945.

Donn traveled to Texas to work for C.F. Braun Engineering Co., where he met the love of his life, Lois Holloway. They would have celebrated 63 years of marriage this Feb. 24. Donn, Lois and family traveled many miles and lived in many states while he was employed as Quality Control Inspector in oil and chemical plants and the Minute Man Missile sites.

Donn arranged to be relocated to Texas to be near family and purchased a small ranch where they raised Charolais cattle, and Donn helped his youngest daughter in many 4-H and FFA projects. After their four children were grown, Donn and Lois traveled to Destin to visit Lois’ sister (Fran Beaird) and her husband (Major Ken Beaird).

Donn and Lois fell in love with Destin, purchased the Flamingo Motel and were proprietors 1979 to 1984. Following the sale of the motel, they purchased an Airstream trailer, joined the Wally Bynum Caravan Club International and traveled to many events as far away as Alaska, making many friends.

They retired from traveling full-time in Grapeland, Texas until just recently (November 2013) moving back to Destin. On Dec. 12, 2013 they moved into their brand new home in Santa Rosa Beach. Donn unexpectedly and suddenly passed away Feb. 5, 2014, from apparent heart failure at the Sacred Heart Hospital.

Donn will be loved and remembered by his wife of 64 years, Lois Holloway Kalthoff; sons, Harry C. Kalthoff of Houston and Michael J. Kalthoff (Joyce) of Baker; daughters, Barbara Steidley (Don) of Destin; Helen Donaldson (Guy) of Destin; grandchildren, Emily Bushong of Huntington Beach, Calif., Michael Wayne Kalthoff of Pensacola, Angela Kalthoff of Fort Walton Beach, Sara Ashley Bowen (Brad) of Destin, Kellie Folley (D.J.) of Niceville, Kenny Donaldson of Destin, Ashley Tschudin (John) of Birmingham, Ala.; and great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Bushong, Sophie and Ella Tschudin, Connor and Ava Folley and Parker, Price and Ashton Reef Bowen. He is also survived by his best friend and loving dog, Coco.

Donn loved to work, especially to “tinker” with anything and everything. He once found pieces of rock slab, then invented and made candles from them. His greatest pleasure during 87 years of life, was watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow. Donn will be remembered as the “fixer of all things” — automotive, building, plumbing, electrical and, most importantly … hearts.

Arrangements have not been finalized, but interment will be at Barrancas National Cemetery in Pensacola.
