What do you get when you put soap, bikinis and sub sandwiches together? The upcoming BeachZone Palms retail plaza on 98.

The building, located at 983 Highway 98 E in front of Winn-Dixie, has been under construction for about eight months now and will soon be home to BeachZone retail beach wear, Executive Car Wash, and Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches. One space is still available in the building which development owner Andrew Valliantos says is compatible to house another restaurant.

“Watch for the grand opening,” said Valliantos, “It should be ready in about a month.”

He added that he hopes to open the site between March 15 and 25 to catch the spring break crowd.

Valliantos, originally from Clearwater Beach, moved to Destin with his family 15 years ago when he discovered the tourism draw to Destin was greater than that in his hometown.

“I’ve always been in the retail business,” he explained, “And Destin has the busiest stores in the nation.”

Valliantos owns other developments and car washes in Destin and Miramar Beach, including a Beach Zone in Walton County, but he has great hopes for this new location.

“My expectation is for it to do very well,” he said, “It’s a great location with a lot of synergy.”

Known for being a staple in college towns, Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches plans to open in Destin in mid-April.

“We’re based on speed,” said franchise owner Travis Brown, “so it enables us to have a drive-through.”

Brown told The Log that Jimmy John’s motto is, “Freaky-Fast Delivery,” and added that ordering will be available online, by call-in, and even from an iPhone app. He noted that although opening is scheduled in April, grand opening festivities for the sub shop will occur a few months later with possible $1 Sub Day.

“We want to get situated for the big summer season,” Brown said, “A lot of tourists will be familiar with the brand, but we hope the locals will like it; we think they will.”
