As the 2013-14 snowbird season winds down, plans are already being made for the next season which, in reality, is only eight months away. Events are being planned and details are being shared for many of those activities so that people may sign up in advance in order to receive the best rates and to also be assured of space for the activity.
During the membership meeting Tuesday, Mike Krueger, golf coordinator, presented Michelle Wright and Jean Grieve a check for $1,500 from the Destin Snowbird Club to the American Cancer Society. Money was collected from the membership in a free will collection and was also donated at the Jack Kline & Lise Walsh Charity Golf Tournament held Feb. 26 at Bluewater Bay Golf Club. While thanking the club, Ms. Grieve noted that this year, the American Cancer Society is celebrating a 20 percent decline in cancer deaths since 1991. She also reported that 72 percent of donated money to the ACS was spent on program services and 28 percent on supporting services. This is a yearly charity sponsored by the Destin Snowbird Club.
Destin Snowbirds are urged to bring any non-perishable items to the Community Center before they leave Destin to return home. Items will be given to Harvest House to be used for local needs.
The Friendship Club will meet for the last time this season at The Black Pearl on Tuesday, March 11. Anyone is invited to attend and it isn’t too late to meet new people and make some contacts for next season.
Three events are in the planning stages for the next snowbird season. The first, “A Magic Christmas in Lights,” is a trip to Bellingrath Gardens with dinner, tour of the home and gardens in Mobile. The cost is $79 per person and reservations may be made at Snowbird Club meetings next season or contact Creative Tours by Pat at 850-243-7777. The second event, “A Stroll Back in Time: A Trip to St. Augustine,” includes motor coach, three days and two nights accommodations at Quality Inn Historic and five meals for $419.00 per person based on double occupancy Jan. 21-23, 2015. Again, Creative Tours by Pat is handling the arrangements. The third event, the Caribbean Cruise, takes place Feb. 1-7, 2015. Contact Don Cooksey at 850-837-3637 for additional information.
Next week’s article, the last of the season, will be written by Nancy Hewitt, next year’s president. I will return to Illinois this Saturday and even though I long to see family and friends again, it is tough thinking about donning gloves, hats, scarves and … a heavy coat if I can even find one in the closet. The Emerald Coast remains in my mind until I return.
