40 years ago — 1974



The Destin Community Center announced a $10,000 renovation of the building, to include air conditioning, remodeled kitchen and a large sunporch.



The Destin Fire Control District reported it had received $4,900 of the $6,500 anticipated from the county’s 1973 allocation of tax receipts.



 



35 years ago — 1979



The space shuttle Columbia was photographed as it circled over Destin before landing at Eglin Air Force Base.



The Destin Chamber of Commerce reported a 48 percent increase in winter visitors, with about 60 percent from Canada and 40 percent from the United States.



 



30 years ago —1984



Destin businesses were unhappy about the loss of on-street parking along U.S. 98.



A transportation sub committee of the Northwest Florida Coastal Resource Planning and Management Committee endorsed the four-laning of U.S. 331 over Choctawhatchee Bay.



 



25 years ago — 1989



Capt. Brant Kelly’s Lady K was the first boat to fill up at the new Destin Fishermen’s Co-op.



The IRS hit Destin developer George Dana “Doodle” Harris with tax liens totaling nearly $11.9 million.



Continued complaints about the noise from Destin nightspots prompted City Council to draft a noise ordinance.



 



20 years ago — 1994



Destin Water Users broke off negotiations with the city for the lease of 29 acres of land for recreational purposes. DWU cited the need to prepare for the summer tourist season.



The oath of office was administered to Destin’s newest mayor, Gary Alden.



The race to catch the cobia was officially on, but the ole crab crunchers were slow getting caught.



A smoked ham for Easter was $1.19 a pound and eggs for dying were a dollar for two dozen.



Seventy-three percent of the readers who responded to The Log’s telephone survey were against a proposed state law allowing prayer in schools.



Crystal Beach Partners planned to build the 12-story Summerchase condominium on the gulf in Crystal Beach.



 



10 years ago — 2004



Emerald Coast Crime Stoppers search for information leading to the arrest of two males who robbed a 62-year-old woman outside her Kelly Street home.



Sugar Beach Interiors was named the exclusive interior design firm for Indigo, a gulf-front, luxury condominium in Perdido Key.



The City of Destin reconstructs Old U.S. 98 to provide better pedestrian pathways and to increase the availability of parking.
