A fatal accident involving a vehicle and a woman on a bicycle occurred at about 7 a.m. Thursday morning near the intersection of Emerald Coast Parkway and Vinings Way.

Parichat Chatmas, a 20-year-old from Bangkok, Thailand, was hit by a man driving a Ford F-150 when trying to cross the intersection. Chatmas resided in the Legacy apartments on Vinings Way and was on her way to work at a McDonalds in Walton County when the accident occurred.

In 2011 and 2012, there were at least three fatalities involving cyclists, based on a 2013 Destin Log story. In Okaloosa County, Robert Crawford was killed after being struck from behind while riding his bike along Okaloosa Island on Easter Day. In Walton County, foreign worker Galina Bumbalova and Georgia Institute of Technology professor Kurt Lang Frankel were both killed after being struck by cars from behind while riding their bikes on the roadway.

According to a press release from the Okaloosa Sheriff's Department, Chatmas was in Destin on a J-1 Cultural Exchange Visa and had just arrived from Thailand on March 14.

Chatmas was pronounced dead around 8 a.m. after being transported by ambulance to Sacred Heart Hospital of the Emerald Coast in Walton County.

The accident is currently under investigation and no charges have been filed at this time
