The Larry Hatchett Fishing Foundation is telling no fish tales this year.
The Oct. 13, 2012, fishing trip was a splashing success. The 95 underprivileged and foster children the foundation took out this year on the almost eight-hour long fishing trip produced 231.2 pounds of fish.
AJ's Seafood & Oyster Bar cooked up the daily catch for the kids, added some sides and made the day a day to remember for everyone involved.
Wilder says he is ready to bump-up the number of children substantially each year, eventually the goal of the foundation is to take 1,000 children fishing.
Wilder said the cost per kid is about $200 per child, but that it is offset by donations to the foundation and captains who donate their time and vessels to the cause.
The foundation is named after Larry Hatchett, who loved fishing ó especially in the Gulf waters of Destin. He thought teaching children the sport of fishing was extremely important, taking children with him whenever possible.
Hatchett passed away in 1990, at only 34 years old, and the Larry Hatchett Fishing Foundation was established by friends and family the same year to honor him. The foundation has been in operation for 22 years under the guidance of Bob Wilder, president, Carmen Hatchett, vice-president, and Susan Hatchett Swain, secretary-treasurer.
The foundation welcomes children from foster homes throughout the south, giving most of the kids their first experience fishing.
