The Insurance Service Office announced Destin’s fire insurance rating was stuck at 7 until the Destin Fire Department improved its response time and had more firefighters respond to fire scenes.



25 years ago — 1987
Bob Hope and Phyllis Diller arrived at Destin Airport for a benefit performance in Fort Walton Beach.
Destin City Council responded to a “roomful of pleas” and dropped plans to open up Stahlman Avenue.



20 years ago — 1992
City Council takes under consideration a request by city staff to adopt a code enforcement board to handle problems, such as slow response by Destin residents to correct code violations.



A 36.4-pound sailfish caught by a Tennessean on Capt. Ken Beaird’s Reveille II takes the top of the leaderboard at the 44th annual Rodeo.



10 years ago — 2002
After five hours of hearings, the city council approved developer Peter Bos’s 14.7-acre HarborWalk Village, despite a near unanimous distaste for the 152-foot high time-share resort.



Destin City Engineer Chuck Meister said Norriego Point continues to erode and will continue until the bulkhead gets extended.



A plane landed on its belly at Destin Airport after its landing gear apparently malfunctioned and another plane, an eight-passenger Cessna, was damaged seriously when it drove off the tarmac. No injuries were reported in either accident.



New leader in the Amberjack Division at the Rodeo was Les Garrett of Tennessee, who caught an 80.2-pound amberjack while fishing on the Gulf Winds II with Capt. Wayne Dillon.



Angler Andy Hollister of Destin caught his first sailfish, 51.6 pounds, and it was also the first sailfish of the 54th annual Destin Fishing Rodeo.
