Under blue skies, the water is clean with a 1- to 2-foot wave rolling in at the Okaloosa Island Pier. Anglers were already pulling in Spanish mackerel, bluefish and hardtail Tuesday morning. Other fish caught in the last couple of days include king mackerel, skipjack and red drum. Pompano and whiting are showing up in the surf.
Redfish and speckled trout are the hot ticket item right now inshore. In the last couple of days 4- to 5-pound trout are being brought to the scales at the Destin Fishing Rodeo, as well as huge slot-size redfish. Trout are biting well in the morning on the grass flats and redfish on the outgoing tide near the bridge and pass.
Some mighty big grouper and amberjack have been hauled in at the docks in the last few days. Last Wednesday a 111-plus pound amberjack hit the scales and on Monday night a 63.6-pound grouper was brought in by the Big John. Other bottom fish coming to the docks include mingo, scamp and white snapper. Offshore, the wahoo and dolphin bite is good. Monday it was a battle of the wahoo with a 58.4 and a 59.4-pounder hitting the docks.
