About 50 local seniors and representatives from the city of Destin gathered at Clement Taylor Park Friday to enjoy steaks, fish and friendship, but also to award the plaque for the Destin “Senior of the Year.”
The award, which was “resurrected,” Mayor Sam Seevers said, goes to a senior in the city who goes above and beyond.
Friday’s honor went to Bernie Collie, who was visibly shocked when his name was called.
Collie is an active community volunteer, a member of the Active Retired Men of Destin, and a regular Rodeo volunteer. He has also been instrumental in growing Destin’s senior program.
“I’m very, very honored and humbled by this award,” Collie told the crowd of about 50 that was gathered at Clement Taylor Park Friday morning. “It’s been my pleasure to work with all of you.”
Seevers said Collie always “steps up to the plate.”
“As mayor, you meet a lot of great people who come into our community, but from the day he stepped foot in Destin he has been an active member of the Destin Community, and immediately became a member of the Destin family.”
