After trailing for about 30 minutes, the Destin Middle School Marlins came back in the last 10 to beat the Seaside Neighborhood School Sharks 34-33 in a 40-minute game in Destin Tuesday evening.
The Sharks, led by Austin Garfalo with 14 points, jumped out to a 15-8 lead in the first half.
Playing two 20-minute non-stop halves, the Sharks took a 6-0 lead in the first 10 minutes with William Cunningham, Garafalo and Jarrod Carley scoring.
Destin finally got on the board with an inside shot from Deonte Sheffield at the 10:26 mark. The scoring went back and forth for the next couple of minutes, before Garafalo got a hot hand in the final seconds hitting a 3-pointer and a layup for a 15-8 lead at the break.
To start the second half, the Sharks continued to bury the Marlins with Carley and Cunningham hitting back-to-back buckets followed by a free throw to put them up 20-8.
Destinís Jason Shirley worked his way inside for a couple of layups to cut the deficit to 20-12.
Ben Balfanz hit a basket then Jack Bruner swished a 3-pointer for the Marlins.
The Sharks scored two more baskets before Destin went on a scoring rampage with Nick Sherer getting things started with a layup. Sheffield and Shirley combined for the next 11 points to take the lead 30-26.
Garafalo hit a free throw, then Destinís Shirley hit two more inside shots for a 34-27 game.
In the last minute, the Sharks made a run at the Marlins with Garafalo and Balfanz hitting a pair of baskets to close the gap, but not enough for the win.
Sheffield led the Marlins with 12 points, while Shirley knocked down 11 points.
Carley scored six points for the Sharks, while Balfanz hit for five. Cunningham tossed in four points.
