This past Tuesday the sounds of Christmas filled the room as the students of Niceville High School's Opus One entertained the audience. Everyone has an opportunity to hear the entire chorus at their performance, “A Wreath of Carols,” Sunday Dec. 16, in Niceville. Limited tickets will be on sale at next week's meeting; see Paul Hewitt.
Treasurer Ken Lemire presented our second charitable donation of the season to Lori Joyner, which she accepted on behalf of Harvest House. This charity operates a thrift shop on Mountain Drive and also runs a food bank for families in need of assistance here in the Destin area and east to Walton County. Snowbirds are welcome to make donations of non-perishable food or clothing at any time during the winter. Some may even take up volunteering with this worthwhile charity. Promoting goodwill among the community and supporting charitable endeavors is a goal of the club.
Last week our registered members totaled 318. The Destin Snowbird Club is a place for all winter visitors to meet new friends and enhance their experience on the Emerald Coast. We welcome all new ideas and volunteers to help in making the club a great success for the 2012/13 season. Past-president Ken Yee is coordinating a membership drive, asking for volunteers to post notices outlining the club activities and functions at various condo properties populated by winter visitors. The goal is to have all our advertising in place in advance of the large crowd that will arrive before the New Year. Please contact Ken at the front of the auditorium for further information. Registration will be held from 1-3 p.m. Monday Dec. 10, at the Community Center.
This week, at 10 a.m. Dec. 11, will be the last meeting of the calendar year. The entertainment will be the Emerald Coast Community Band. Several talented members of the club will also have their crafts on sale at the rear of the auditorium. This event is a small version of the much larger craft show and sale that will be held in February.
Following the meeting the Friendship Club will have a luncheon at Callahan's Restaurant and Deli. The club is composed of single snowbirds and is coordinated by Joann Benesh.
Wednesday afternoon the quilting group will begin at 1:30 p.m. in the Destin Senior's Center. Thursday evening a Christmas dinner will be held to celebrate the holiday season. The storage locker be open from 8-9 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 15. This will wrap up the scheduled club activities until the New Year. Watch for the details of big registration Jan. 7 in upcoming editions of this paper.
