The couple from Detroit, Mich., wanted to make the day they got married something unique, but tying the knot on Dec. 12, 2012, or 12-12-12, needed something a little extra.
Tyronee Penny and her fiancé, Bobby Branch, plan to marry today at Noon – or 12-12-12-12 – along the Emerald Coast with their parents and an uncle watching.
“I’m all about the details,” explained Tyronee Penny. “It’ll be a memorable day for us.” She’s the one who came up with the idea for a noontime start.
Penny and Branch had been engaged for a little while and were trying to decide on a date to marry, but their initial reaction after hearing about 12-12-12 wasn’t to make it their wedding date.
The couple thought about putting a message in a bottle and letting it sail away. Detroit has plenty of access to water, including the Detroit River, which connects to Lakes Erie and St. Clair.
But, the date was catchy and another 12-12-12 won’t happen again for 100 years. It also had mystical overtones, something about the Mayan calendar, which promised conviction and strength. So, the couple decided it would serve better as a wedding date.
Christine Walker, event director at RSVP Destin and B-Boy Productions, helped Penny and Branch plan their wedding.
She wasn’t surprised that a married couple to-be would pick such a fun and easy-to-remember date. Sequentially tidy anniversaries are popular.
“I saw it for 10-10-10, 11-11-11 and even for 8-9-10 and 9-10-11,” she said.
If there isn't an appreciable number of people getting married today, it might be because the 12th day of the 12th month of the year 2012 fell on a weekday.
Walker offered another observation about alliterative dates as a popular time for weddings.
“Generally, it makes it easier for the groom to remember the anniversary,” she said with a laugh.
Branch, Penny’s fiancé, agreed that it would be tough for a man – or woman – to forget that date. Mostly, though, he said they picked the date for its novelty.
To make the day more special, the couple is hoping everything goes off a without hitch today, so that their anniversary date is the desired quadruple 12.
Otherwise, he said with a laugh, “It’s going to be somebody’s head.”
