Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world. (James 1:27)
It is clear from the Word of God that every Christian has a moral obligation to help the orphans and widows, as they are able to, and to keep themselves unspotted from the world.
Now, please hear me say this: you can give to orphans and widows, but live a sinful life, and go straight to hell. That is why James added that we must also keep ourselves unspotted from the world. James does not say that Christ will keep the Christian unspotted from the world, but rather that the Christian has the obligation to keep himself (herself) unspotted from the world.
Jesus Christ shed His sinless, precious blood in order to wash our sins away, if we repent of our sins and trust Him to. He cleanses us from our sins, and the guilt of our sins. But it is our duty to live holy, pure lives, and not to return to our sins.
This is why Hebrews 10:26 says, "For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for our sins."
So, James added to helping the orphans and widows, those who cannot help themselves, that we must continue to be unspotted from this sinful, wicked world. The only way that we can possibly accomplish such a task is to continually and intentionally abide in Christ. We do this through prayerfully reading the Word of God (the Bible), praise and worship, fasting, and much prayer. The Christian who prays most receives most from God. The more that we speak to Christ, the more that
He speaks to us. He rewards those that diligently seek Him. (See Hebrews 11:6)
It is very important for every Christian to be filled with the Holy Spirit, with the evidence of speaking in tongues (the language of the Holy Spirit), and to continue speaking (praying) to God on a daily basis in the heavenly language. See 1 Corinthians 14:2 and Romans 8:26. As we do, the Holy Spirit will intercede on behalf of our weaknesses, and help us to stay unspotted from this world.
Then, as we abide in Christ, we can effectively reach out to the orphans and the widows, the poor and the needy, the naked and the hungry, and love them as Jesus would have us to, as we follow in His footsteps going about doing good, healing all them that are oppressed of the devil. For God will be with us. (See Acts 10:38)
