The Destin Marlins came on strong in the second half to clip the Lewis Falcons 52-43 in boy’s middle school basketball action Thursday night in Valparaiso.
“We got off to a slow start,” said Destin Coach Ron Griffiths.
At the end of the first quarter, the Marlins trailed 14-12, but managed to tie the game at 20-20 by the half.
The difference in the game came in the third. Destin outscored Lewis 21-8 in the third period alone.
“We stepped up the defensive pressure and turned it into easy baskets,” Griffiths said. “We anticipated the pass,” he said resulting in four or five steals for quick baskets. “That was the turning point in the game.”
Top scorer for the Marlins (2-0) was Deonte Sheffield with 24 points. Matthew Boswell knocked down three 3-pointers on his way to 12 points. Jason Shirley also hit double digits with 10 points, and Jack Bruner tossed in a pair of 3-pointers.
Up next for the Marlins is a 6:30 p.m. game Monday at home against the Davidson Panthers.
In other action, the Destin girls basketball team lost 38-19 to Lewis.
