After a slow start, the South Walton Seahawks blasted the Freeport Bulldogs 61-18 in girls varsity basketball action Friday night in Freeport.



"I thought we played fairly well," said South Walton Coach Kevin Craig. "I was surprised that the score was so lopsided," he said noting that the Freeport girls played well in the recent holiday basketball tournament.



Nevertheless, the Seahawks soared with three players scoring in double digits. Casey Perot led the Seahawks with 17 points, while Eve Heffron scored 11 and Tayler Menard tossed in 10.



"I thought we were very patient and much more disciplined," Craig said.



Prior to the game, Craig said they had two intense practices where the focused on the details. And the practice paid off with the Seahawks outscoring the Bulldogs every quarter.



To start, South Walton got on the board with a basket from Katie Logan followed by a free throw from Morgan Kennedy.



Freeport answered with a basket from Charity Head. South Walton's Katie Trejo scored from the paint, then Freeport's Mary Kate Myrick, who had eight points for the game, nailed a three-pointer to tie the game at 5-5.



The Seahawks pulled away with three consecutive baskets from Mackenzie Perot, Logan and Menard on a steal. Freeport's Shadia Mitry hit a jump shot, then South Walton made a couple of free throws to finish the quarter at 13-7.



In the second quarter, the Seahawks turned it up a notch and outscored the Bulldogs 16-3. M. Perot hit a jump shot, then Kennedy dished off to Heffron who put it on the glass for two points. M. Perot came back with another inside shot for a 19-7 lead.



Myrick hit the only Freeport basket about midway of the period on a 3-pointer right up the middle. South Walton continued to add on the points with C. Perot turning in a three-point play, Trejo scoring two free throws and a basket and Menard sinking a 3-pointer for a 29-10 lead at the half.



In the third quarter, South Walton came out and sank a couple of 3-pointers and a two from underneath to go up by 29 points. Freeport finally broke the Seahawk run and made a little run of its own. Katie Decker hit a free throw, then Myrick made an inside shot. Mitry went up for the lay-up, made the shot and the free throw for a 39-16 game. By the end of the third, South Walton was still on top 48-18.



The fourth quarter was all South Walton with the Dogs not getting anything to fall. C. Perot scored six points, while Heffron hit for five. Kennedy chipped in a basket.



For the game, South Walton made eight of 11 free throws while Freeport was five of two.



Up next for the 11-5 South Walton Seahawks is a couple of road games. The Seahawks travel to Franklin County on Thursday, then to St. Joe on Friday.



Freeport will host Jay at 6 p.m. Friday.
