I believe that this may be one of the last letters Gen. Schwarzkopf wrote before he left Saudi Arabia. He returned to America a day or so after it was mailed from Saudi.
He was going to come to Camp Pendleton, Calif., just north of San Diego. While residing in California, we had an avocado grove near the back gate of Pendleton. Being so close, I thought that I would invite him to an Italian dinner, which I would cook for him. I also had a boutique winery and was hoping to go commercial.
Although the general was known to be tough, this letter shows the other deep side of him — personable, kind and full of humor.
My condolences go to all his family. We lost a great patriot at such a young age.
