There are lots of reasons to celebrate January here on the Emerald Coast. A great crowd of snowbirds come to the Destin Community Center every Tuesday for entertainment and a report of the club's weekly activities. The gymnasium is filled to near capacity for both meetings with members and more than 30 sponsoring vendors.

Club activities are all up and running. Please note however that Monday Jan. 21 is Martin Luther King Day, and events scheduled for the Destin Senior Center will not be held as the building is closed for the holiday. The next registration will take place from 1-3 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28.

Special club activities are coming soon. Last Tuesday was the first of three special Tuesday afternoon parties at the Seascape Conference Center. Saturday, Jan. 26, Seascape will be the scene of A Country Hoedown Party with entertainment by Christian & James. Tickets are $15 and include a feed of barbeque chicken, baked beans and cornbread. Tuesday afternoon parties are scheduled again for Feb. 5 and 19. Judy Willson will announce the details at upcoming meetings.

The students of the arts program at Northwest Florida State College are set to perform the 24th annual Soundsations concert Sunday, Feb. 10. The $10 tickets are available through the club at meetings and registrations, or can be purchased by check only at the Destin Community Center office. For a preview of this talented group of young people, check out the performance of the NWF State College Show Choir Sunday afternoon, Jan. 20, at HarborWalk Village. Elise Eggert will be in attendance to sell tickets for the upcoming concert. The group also will be at the regular snowbird meetings Feb. 5.

Special events are planned for the ladies. Feb. 14 is the day for a Valentine Luncheon and Fashion Show featuring the fashions of Coldwater Creek. Feb. 20 is a Ladies Only golf scramble at Bluewater Bay. Tickets for all events are available in front of the stage area prior to each meeting.

The month of February will end with a special golf event in support of the American Cancer Society. All snowbirds are encouraged to participate in a fun play day of golf at Bluewater Bay Feb. 27 in memory of Jack Kline and Lise Walsh. Golf Coordinator Mike Krueger is selling tickets for this event.

The Destin Snowbird activity calendar is busy, but many members also find time to take in many other community events. The Destin Library has several programs, including a movie afternoon at 2 p.m. Wednesdays. Call 837-8572 for further information.

Many winter visitors are accustomed to having a recycling programs at their homes up north. The City of Destin invites all who can't find a green bin at their condo complex to use the single stream recycling in the Public Services Maintenance Yard, 3949 Commons Dr. There is also a large bottle located in the foyer of the Community Center for the collection of aluminum can tabs, with the proceeds going to Ronald McDonald House. How many members can remember to bring the tabs to the meeting each week?

Following the next meeting the Friendship Club will meet at the Back Porch for a weekly luncheon. Joann will announce a weekend activity for the group each week. Further events and activities are listed on the club website www.destinsnowbirds.org.
