First Baptist Church, 201 Beach in Destin, will celebrate love and appreciation with events featuring music and ice cream for locals and snowbirds for Valentine’s Day this year.
Valentine banquet and concert
For Valentines, it’s an evening starting with steaks and ending with stars of gospel songs during a special evening at 6 p.m. Feb. 13.
The menu includes steak or chicken, baked potato, salad and dessert for $10 with free hot dogs, chips and drink for children. The evening ends with a concert by the gifted, dynamic, inspirational and encouraging vocal duet of Les and Linda Green.
“This will be a delightful evening with plenty to eat, praise and worship,” said pastor Dr. Farren Roper who will be grilling all afternoon to fill plates full as church serves a Valentine’s Banquet.
“The Les and Linda Green music ministry will end the evening in concern delivering one warm melody after another with Southern Gospel songs displaying their awesome God given talent,” said Roper.
Les Green, who has appeared with Bill Gaither and Billy Graham, and wife Linda, are award winning and well known ministers of music who provide a warm, authentic presentation of the Gospel message in song.
Sweet bonus for snowbirds
Winter visitors from all over the world fill the parking lot and pack the pews each Sunday morning at First Baptist Church in Destin. For Valentine’s Day the church will provide sweet treats at Sugar Baby’s Candy & Ice Cream Shop for snowbirds.
“It will be ‘Sundae’ on Thursday,” Dr. Farren Roper, church pastor, said. “Our winter visitors are such a blessing. They come each year like family from afar, our choir fills to overflowing, and they pitch in on church projects without hesitation. This year we wanted to do something special, and hand-dipped ice cream was better than a potluck lunch.”
Sugar Baby’s Candy & Ice Cream Shop, behind the Texaco Station across from Target at 802 U.S. 98 E in Shoreline Village, will set up tables and staff will serve up a variety of treats from “Jacked up Tennessee Toffee” to “Eskimo Kisses” from their 24 flavors of hand-dipped ice cream.
“Each year we try to provide a monthly event for our winter visitors and thought the church providing a Valentine’s Day treat would leave a good taste,” said Patti McIntosh who coordinates the fellowship ministry.
