Beach Brawl Derby Dolls 80s Prom

Seaside Jazz Festival — A Journey Through Jazz
The Merchants of Seaside present two weekends of music at the Seaside Jazz Festival: A Journey through Jazz, to be held May 17-18 and 23 in the town’s amphitheater.
The first festival weekend will feature Latin Grammy winner Nestor Torres, The Rebirth Brass Band, Shamarr Allen, Ted Shumate and Jesse McBride.

Family Fun Arts Fest
The first Family Fun Arts Fest will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 18 at Henderson Beach State Park. Events will include performances by local art groups, family fun contests, games and art classes. A silent auction and booths with fine arts, crafts and food will also be set up. Call to artists: Celebrate Pensacola
Artists can leave their mark on Pensacola’s history by designing the signature poster for the 450th anniversary celebration. Celebrate Pensacola, Inc. will host the poster contest to commemorate Pensacola’s founding in 1559 and reflect the rich history, culture and events that have made Pensacola the fascinating community it is today. The 450th celebration will begin May 23, 2008 and end 450 days later on August 15, 2009.
Amateur and professional artists of any age are invited to submit poster designs representing the 450-year history of Pensacola. The winning artist will receive $1,000. The contest deadline is noon May 19. The winning poster design will be unveiled at the 450th kick-off celebration held at 5 p.m. May 23 on Palafox Place surrounding the fountain at the Escambia County Courthouse.
Entry art must be a minimum of 14 inches by 24 inches and no larger than 24 inches by 36 inches. Any medium is permitted. Artists must submit an original piece. No more than two designs may be submitted per person.

Memorial Day Weekend Festivities and Tribute
The Village of Baytowne Wharf at Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort will have a slip and slide for children down the Big River — an inflatable water slide — on May 23. The Village welcomes back sand sculptor Mark Flynn and Sand Odyssey as he creates a work of art in the Events Plaza.
Live music will also be heard May 23-26. The annual Memorial Day weekend fireworks extravaganza over the lagoon marks the beginning of summer. Call 267-8117.

Call to Artists: Destin Seafood Festival
To celebrate its 30th anniversary and return to a harbor-front location, the Destin Seafood Festival is issuing a call to artists for the 2008 Destin Seafood Festival Poster Contest. The theme of this year’s contest is “Back to the Harbor.”
All artwork must be handcrafted by the artist. No computer-generated or enhanced artwork will be accepted. Entries are due to the Chamber office by noon June 6. The winner will be notified by June 24.
The festival, Oct. 3-5 at HarborWalk Village alongside the harbor docks, will feature fresh local seafood, live entertainment, arts and crafts booths, children’s activities, and more.

Drawing workshop
The Cultural Arts Association will offer a drawing workshop taught by Fort Walton artist and art teacher Barbara Fudge from 9 a.m. to noon June 7 at the Cultural Arts Association office, 2282 W. County Road 30A.
The class, appropriate for artists at all levels, will focus on drawing shapes and learning to see art as the relationships of shapes.

Digital arts festival
“Digital Graffiti,” an event created to celebrate and recognize some of the world’s most talented and innovative digital artist, comes to Scenic 30A Aug. 30.
Alys Beach has announced numerous award categories and prizes. To qualify for the Best Local Artist award, the winner must reside full-time in Walton, Okaloosa, Bay or Washington County.
Deadline for all submissions of original works of digital art is July 11. Entries may include new or existing abstract digital imagery, short films, photography, VJ sets, animations, YouTube videos, Adobe PhotoShop creations or entirely new interactive concepts. All subject matter is eligible for the festival, although a special $1,000 prize will be awarded to the best entry with a “green” or environmental theme.

The 13th annual Destin Festival of the Arts will be presented by the Mattie Kelly Arts Foundation on Oct. 25 and 26 at Henderson Beach State Park in Destin awarding over $8,200 in cash prizes. Applications are now being accepted for juried show artists ($30 non-refundable jury fee and $175 booth fee). Poster entries for the signature poster and T-shirt design will be featured on festival promotional materials and merchandise with a $350 cash award.

Movie Night Beach Party
Uptown Station’s Central Park Beach Party and Surfer Movie begins at 5 p.m. May 24 with demonstrations of surfing and kite surfing from Fluid Surf Shop and XL Kites.
For the kids, Color Me Crazy Tattoos and Airbrush Temporary Tattoos, all at $1 per tattoo. The Uptown Express Mini train ride will be $1 per ride. Plus, children can play in the interactive water fountain and on the playground.
Sno cones, popcorn, candy and beverages from Ocean Breeze, plus hotdogs and nachos from Fanfare Arcade, will be available.

3-D concerts
Rave Motion Pictures, Destin Commons, has brought a new age of concerts to the movie screen with 3-D concerts.
Shine A Light, a Rolling Stones Concert/Documentary directed by Martin Scorsese, opened April 4.
Kidtoons at The Rave
Kidtoons is a year-long program that provides only G-rated movies at The Rave at Destin Commons. Each program includes a movie, cartoon shorts and music videos.
New programs begin on the first Saturday of every month and run for the whole month. Show times will be scheduled for Saturday, Sunday and Tuesday of each week. Full listings will be available at www.destinrave.com, in local newspapers and at the Destin Commons information kiosk.
Each program runs between one hour and ten minutes and one hour and thirty minutes. Tickets are $7.50 per person at the box office and theater kiosk. Tickets can also be purchased at www.movietickets.com. Each child that attends a Kidtoons program receives a free gift.

Choctawhatchee Estuary Festival
Pack a picnic lunch and enjoy the first Choctawhatchee Estuary Festival, a free family and community event for all ages, from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. June 1 at Fred Gannon Rocky Bayou State Park, 4281 Highway 20 East in Niceville.
The event will feature activities including fish printing on T-shirts, crab races, hiking, seining for fish, informative displays, guided nature walks, kayak and canoe tours, a presentation and book signing by local children’s author Paul Lowery, and Native American flutist Jonny Lipford. Summerfest 2008
June 1 through Aug. 17, the Destin Harbor will present Harbor Celebrations on Thursdays, Saturday and Sundays which will showcase the uniqueness of the Destin Harbor.
Thursday nights will have fireworks and a presentation of a local military hero at HarborWalk Village.
Saturday nights will feature live music on the Harbor.
Sundays feature Art on the Harbor with local artist displays of watercolors, oil paintings, whimsical signs, abstract art, pottery, fused/wired glass, wood carvings, photography, jewelry and more. Artists will set up beginning at 11 a.m. and the event is free. Mattie Kelly Arts foundation will present an ArtStop tent featuring kid’s art projects.

Billy Bowlegs Pirate Festival
The 53rd annual Billy Bowlegs Pirate Festival will be held the weekend of June 6. Area residents are invited to an evening of special events on June 5 at Fort Walton Landing.
Junior buccaneers can collect booty and other goodies during the Pirate Walk beginning at 5 p.m. Children can enjoy face-painting, games, free balloons and other activities until 7 p.m. downtown.
Fort Walton Landing comes alive with food, music and festivities at 5 p.m. Sign up for the costume contests at 5:30 p.m., with the first 12 contestants accepted in each category.
Recording artist Jerrod Niemann will entertain at the first Scallywag Ball to be held from 5-10 p.m.
BamaJam Music & Arts Festival
Enterprise, Ala. will host the inaugural BamaJam Music & Arts Festival June 5-7 at Boy Scout Road and Highway 167.
Presenting 30 award winning acts from country, classic rock, alternative and bluegrass, BamaJam will be host Bama Market, Bama Music Lounge, Bama Media Lounge, BamaJam Sponsors Plaza, Bama-a-Rama Kids Zone and BamaJam Park. World-class artists will perform on the three separate stages.
Randy Owen, former member of Alabama, kicks off the festival June 5 with Little Big Town (“Boondocks”) and Darryl Worley (“Have You Forgotten?”).
ZZ-Top performs June 6 and Hank Williams, Jr. and Lynyrd Skynyrd will perform June 7.
Other performers include Miranda Lambert, Ricky Skaggs, Del McCoury, Ralph Stanley, Dan Tyminski and Nanci Griffith.

Legendary Poker Run
The seventh annual Legendary Destin Poker Run, benefiting the Destin Family YMCA and local Fire Fighters Children’s Burn Camp of North Florida, will take place June 13 and 14 along the Emerald Coast.
The Poker Run begins with a Captain’s Party at 7:30 p.m. June 13 at Emerald Grande resort on the Destin harbor at HarborWalk Village. Captains of each boat will be required to attend a safety meeting at 6:30 p.m.
Participants will begin the boat run at 10 a.m. June 14 with eight stops available. The event concludes Saturday evening with the official Poker Run Party at the Legendary Marine showroom at the south side of the Mid-Bay Bridge in Destin.
Registration fee is a $360 tax deductible donation and includes four poker hands, four Captain’s Party tickets, and four Official Poker Run Party tickets.
