Destin man takes mother's car keys by 'stealth,' crashes car
DESTIN -- A 21-year-old man with a suspended license took his parents' 2010 Ford Fusion while they were sleeping on Feb. 6 and crashed it, according to his Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office arrest report.
Luke William Van Atta was charged with felony vehicle theft.
His father told deputies that he and his wife had been driving their son around since he could not legally drive. On Feb. 6, between midnight and 4 a.m., their son removed the car keys "by stealth" from his mother's purse, the report said.
At 4:15, he was involved in a traffic crash with that car and charged with DUI, as well as theft.
He has a March 16 court date.
