City of Destin wraps up annual tree trimming
The City of Destin is wrapping up its annual tree trimming. Public Services crews began trimming vegetation that was not compliant with the city’s Code of Ordinances in late November and will finish the project in the Indian Bayou subdivision in the next several weeks.
Tree trimming guidelines:
The city requests property owners perform the trimming themselves as is required by the Code of Ordinances. Clear pathways are essential for both vehicles and pedestrians. All pathways must allow easy and safe access as people travel through town. Larger vehicles such as school buses, ambulances, RV’s, fire trucks and delivery vehicles require higher clearances than passenger vehicles and must be able to travel the roadways without hitting vegetation. Sidewalks must also be clear to avoid injuries to pedestrians. General requirements are as follows:
Roadways must have a 15-foot high clearance and a minimum one and a half foot clearance to the sides of the roadways.
Sidewalks, recreational trails and multi-use paths must have a 10-foot high clearance and a one-foot clearance on both sides of the walkways.
Also during the project, “vision triangles” at intersections were addressed to allow proper sight lines for vehicles. These “vision triangle” requirements are determined by the type of road and the speeds allowed on the road.
Further information on code requirements can be obtained from either the Community Development Department or the Public Services Department at 850-837-4242.
