Margie Destin Duty
Margie Destin Duty, of Destin, Fla., died Feb. 8, 2012, at Destin Rehabilitation Center .
She was born in Destin on Jan. 13, 1933, to Dewey and Cleo Edward Destin. Her parents and her brothers, Dewey E. (Buck) Destin and Harold F. (Chubby) Destin, predeceased her.
She is survived by her sons, Randy (Susie) Davis and Kenneth Davis; grandsons, Tommy Davis, Kyle (Catherine) Davis and Nick Davis; and granddaughter, Tammy (Chad) Greenwood. She also leaves behind three great- grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and sister-in-law, Muriel Destin.
“Mama D”, as she was known to many people, was in the service industry more than 30 years at the Destin Campground and American Legion. She loved her customers, the sun and the beach and was a true Destin native.
At her request to be cremated, she will be taken out to sea and spread in the Gulf at a later date. Arrangements are being made to cremate the deceased by Davis and Watkins Mortuary.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Heart Association and Covenant Hospice.
Nell Thornton
Nell Thornton, 68, was called to be an angel jof God on Feb. 5, 2012. Her cheerful personality and bright smile will be missed by many from Birmingham, Ala., to the shores of Walton County where she has lived in Seagrove Beach for the remaining years of her life.
Nell survived life as the baby sister to four big brothers. Her two sons, Robert B. Watson of Birmingham and Preston Earl Watson of Pell City, Ala., survive Nell as well as her brothers, Rube Thornton of Montgomery, Joseph Thornton of Leesburg, Fla., and Charles N. Thornton of Seagrove Beach; and many nephews and nieces.
Her parents, Reuben and Nell Thornton of Montgomery and her brother, Hugh Thornton of Destin, precede her in death.
A memorial celebration of life will be held in her honor at 10 a.m. Feb. 18 at The Camel Club, 296 East Hewett Road in Santa Rosa Beach. A private service for family will follow.
In lieu of flowers, a donation to The Camel Club in her honor is appreciated.
Harold E. Miller
Harold E. Miller, 80, of Destin, Fla., passed away in a local hospital Feb. 7, 2012. He was born on Jan 9, 1932, in Lineville, Ala. He was a resident of the local area for the past eight years, moving here from Montgomery, Ala. He was Methodist by faith and a member of Destin United Methodist Church.
He honorably served his country in the U.S. Navy. He worked for Winn Dixie for 44 years and retired as the division manager for the Montgomery Division. He loved golf and being with his golfing buddies. He also enjoyed fishing. He was an avid Auburn fan.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, James Miller.
Survivors include his loving wife, Janet, of 58 years; son, Gerry Chalker and wife, Beth, of Shalimar; daughter, Ann Mask of Birmingham, Ala.; five grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
The family will receive friends at a visitation from 1 to 2 p.m. Feb 10 at McLaughlin Mortuary Chapel, 17 Chestnut Ave. S.E., in Fort Walton Beach. Funeral services will follow at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Tom Sharron officiating. Following services, entombment will be at Beal Memorial Cemetery.
