With summer fast approaching, it’s time to remember that thousands of accidents and deaths occur in the home every year as a result of fire.
A good way to drive the message home is Destin’s annual Family Fire Drill, set for Sunday, May 18.
The Family Fire Drill is a campaign to raise fire safety awareness and remind families to practice mock fire drills. They should establish a plan to escape their home and account for one another in the event of a fire.
“Summer is coming and children may be left home alone,” said Ann Hadsall-Allen, co-creator of the Family Fire Drill. “Establishing a plan for safety or creating a new one can save lives.”
On Sunday between noon and 7 p.m., Mom or Dad is to yell “Fire!” and the entire family is to follow the escape routes that were planned and discussed beforehand.
Each room of the house should be examined by everyone to identify two possible exits that are accessible. There should also be an object available that will shatter a window if necessary.
And if you forgot to renew the batteries in your smoke detectors when setting the clocks back, now would be an opportune time.
Upon completion of the fire drill, Destin residents are asked to fill out and return the fire drill surveys that will help the firefighters plan the focus of their education for the next Fire Prevention Month in October. Returning a completed survey, no later than May 27, to one of the two Destin fire stations enters the family in a drawing for a chance to win a ride on a fire truck. Surveys will be printed in Saturday’s edition of The Log.
Destin youths are also reminded that entries for the fire safety awareness poster, slogan and 3D art contest will be accepted through May 23 at the Community Center. Winners of the contests and the drawing will be announced on May 28.
