A RALLY TO THE TALLY: After slipping to the bottom, Destin battles back in Florida's Best Beach contest
While Destin appears to have victory well in hand, it's never too late to vote. Click here to learn more.
Separated by more than 550 miles and almost 2,000 votes, Destin was an outlier in the tally of Florida’s Best Beaches by U.S. News and World Report.
On Friday morning, an online glitch knocked Destin to the bottom of the list with 19 votes. But within hours, the fishing village was back in the lead with 538 votes and carried the torch throughout the weekend. The count as of Tuesday morning was 2,555 with Fort Lauderdale in a distant second with 567 votes.
Others locations making the list of top beaches included Fort Myers, Key West, Miami Beach, Naples, Sanibel Island and West Palm Beach — all located in South Florida. But even their tropical charm couldn’t woo voters.
Called one of the most affordable beach towns, “The World’s Luckiest Fishing Village” sees visitors from across the South and Midwest looking for white beaches and family fun. The win comes on the heels of Destin nabbing the spotlight in “National Geographic,” “Forbes,” “Good Morning America,” and the World Fishing Network.
