FREEPORT – A high-flying Freeport boys basketball team made short work of Oliver Springs, Tenn., to close out the first day of play in the Hilton Sandestin Beach Basketball Blowout on Tuesday.
Led by Austin Woodard’s 26 points, the Bulldogs beat the Bobcats 79-44.
Woodard might have been the game’s leading scorer, but it was sophomore Gabe Moore who stole the show.
Moore, who finished the game with 20 points, brought the home fans to their feet with four slam dunks. Moore’s first dunk came with 1:11 left in the first half. His final three dunks came in a 37-second span starting with 3:04 left in the fourth quarter. Moore’s final dunk put the Bulldogs up 76-40 and started the running clock for the last 2:27 of the game.
Moore scored the game’s first basket in a less dramatic fashion 25 seconds into the contest and the Bulldogs never trailed.
Woodard followed Moore’s score with a 3-point basket at the 7:10 mark. Freeport led by as much as nine in the first quarter and was up 15-10 at the end of the first period.
Freeport stretched lead to 40-20 at the half as Collin Myrick scored six of his 15 points.
The Bulldogs continued to pour it on in the second half using a relentless defense and first scoring offensive attack to put the game out of reach.
Caleb Piasecki finished off a quartet of Freeport players in double figures scoring 16 points. William Canaday was the only other Freeport player to score.
John Simmons was the only Oliver Springs player in double figures. He had 14 points.
“It was a good win after the holidays, Freeport coach David Burke said. “I was pleased with the way we played.
“We played our up tempo game and got the win. And that was it.”
Freeport plays Cookeville (Tenn.) Wednesday night at 8:30 in the second round of the tournament.
