Destin partygoer picks up 'fools gold,' finds out it's real
FORT WALTON BEACH -- A Destin man accused of taking $1,350 in gold nuggets during a Dec. 27 party said he thought the bag was filled with "Fools Gold," according to his Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office arrest report.
Geoffrey Douglas Owen, who is 19, said he found the bag on the ground outside of the house. When he went home and showed the gold to his mom, she told him it was real.
Two weeks after the party, he pawned the gold for $100 cash and a receipt for $638 more.
When someone from the party told Owen that the gold was missing, he didn't say that he had the stolen gold, according to his arrest report.
He was charged with theft and dealing in stolen property.
