Sarah K's looking for culinary kids for new show

Local chef to spoon out healthy, child-friendly tips in upcoming show

Casting call!
To be considered for “Kids in the Kitchen with Sarah K,” send a photo, age, contact information, and an age-appropriate recipe of 10 ingredients or less from children ages four to 14 to Sarah K's Gourmet at 34940 Hwy 98, Suite 183, Destin, FL 32541.

Mission: Impossible is sometimes getting the kids to eat their vegetables, but local Chef Sarah Schreifer is tying on her apron to show us how it's done and how to save a few bucks in her upcoming show “Kids in the Kitchen with Sarah K.”

“Right now the economic environment is terrible and parents are cutting back on eating out and kids activities,” Schreifer told The Log.
Tough times are not the only thing motivating the owner of Sarah K's Gourmet in Destin.

“There's such an epidemic of childhood obesity,” she said.

Schreifer, not yet a mom herself, heard from other parents about how they've had to pull their kids out of extracurricular activities due to the extra expense.

Fewer family outings and activities mean more couch time, so Schreifer thought of what she can do to help battle the youthful bulge.
Late last year, she pitched the idea of a cooking show that teaches children how to cook healthy to media outlets across the region. 30a Television showed interest in Schreifer's idea.

And she may be on to something.

Even the line-up on the Food Network is becoming more waistline and wallet friendly. She said she plans to begin with segments on cooking with children, then maybe branch into involving parents with the cooking and shopping. She may also make baby food and pet treats.

By involving the kids in healthy cooking, Schreifer said foods kids don't normally like will be more appealing.

“The kids don't lose interest in what they're eating, because they made it,” she said.

To help her whip up some mindful, kid-friendly cuisine, Sarah K's Gourmet is holding an open casting call for children between the ages of four and 14-years-old to be featured on “Kids in the Kitchen with Sarah K” on 30a Television and their Web site show. To be considered, send a recent photo and the child's age, contact information and an age appropriate recipe to Sarah K's Gourmet at 34940 Hwy 98, Suite 183, Destin FL 32541.

Recipes must be fresh, simple and contain 10 ingredients or less.

The show is set to air by the fall on Mediacom, Comcast networks in Walton and Bay counties, and on the 30-a Television Web site.

“We want to focus on nutrition, buying local and really getting back with the family.”

Need a summer treat?
Sarah K's Speedy Ice Cream is a fun, hands-on recipe.

1 cup half-and-half
1/4 cup sugar
1 tsp. vanilla extract
4 cups coarsely crushed iced cubes
3/4 cup salt
1 small resealable plastic bag
2 large resealable plastic bags

In a small resealable plastic bag, combine the cream, sugar and vanilla. Press out the air and seal the bag. This is bag number one.
In a large resealable plastic bag, combine the ice and salt. Place the sealed bag number one into this bag.
Place the larger bag that now contains the ice, salt and sealed smaller bag with the sugar, half-and-half and vanilla into another large plastic bag and seal.
Shake and knead for five to seven minutes until the cream mixture is thickened. Serve immediately or freeze. Yields one cup.

Should the city have settled with The Oasis?
No. Under no circumstances should a strip club be allowed to open in Destin.
No. I think the city could have negotiated better terms.
Yes. I don't want nude dancing in Destin, but the city can't legally ban strip clubs.
Yes. Bring on the half-naked women!
I don't care. A strip club won't last long in Destin.
