Name the College: OWC to get a name change
The college’s trustees could vote on a new name next month
What's in a name?
Okaloosa-Walton College officials are finding out as they whittle down the list of possible new monikers for the school.
Since the school officially became a state college, OWC President
Bob Richburg said he's been compiling a list of suggestions from
students, faculty, trustees and residents.
Richburg said he hasn't found a favorite of his own yet.
"I've not gone there," he said. "The ones that are there have their good aspects and perhaps their shortfallings."
Before OWC's board of trustees can choose a name, they must ask what they are trying to say about the college.
It's
location? The local environment? Or an emphasis on the school's recent
change to a state college? The trustees will review the list at a
meeting July 8. In the meantime, the public and students are invited to
comment.
Originally, the board planned to have the final vote in
September. However, if trustees can reach a consensus at the July
meeting, the name may be officially changed then.
Some research still must be conducted, including the availability of Web site domains.
When a name is chosen, Richburg said "Okaloosa-Walton College" will be phased out rather than done away with immediately.
The school won't reprint catalogues or change athletic uniforms until the regular cycle time. Road signs will change as needed, Richburg said.
"That's not going to go away. People are going to know that's us," Richburg said.
The
name change is important for a number of reasons. But primarily, "it
broadens the base of people who will consider choosing our school,"
Richburg said.
Jesse O'Brien, student government president, said the OWC must find a name that shows what the school really entails.
"I
think that's awesome to be able to offer more four year degrees,"
O'Brien said. "It's definitely a step up for OWC, or whatever our new
name is going to be."
