REFLECTIONS OF PROGRESS? With possible condo on the horizon, Gilligan's expanding watersports operation to new site

If all goes smoothly, the under-construction lot next to Destin Inn will boast a new business, Harbor Watersports, by the time the spring breakers arrive, Mike Abadie of Gilligan’s Restaurant and Watersports says.

“I am in the watersports business here at Gilligan’s,” Abadie told The Log, “and we’re expanding to a new location. We’re building a watersports business there (for) renting waverunners, pontoon boats, dolphin tours, parasaiing.”

The construction will include a small building for the offices and rest rooms, redoing the parking lot, putting in docks and eventually having a deck down by the water, Abadie said.

Abadie told The Log he’d originally planned to open Harbor Watersports because Gilligan’s was going to be the site for Harbor Reflections, a 15-story condo tower the Destin City Council approved two years ago. Like several other major developments, Harbor Reflections has yet to break ground, but Abadie said he decided to go ahead with his new business anyway, though Gilligan’s will remain open in the meanwhile.

If Harbor Reflections doesn’t happen, he said, “we’ll be selling watersports on this site for many years to come.”

Weigh in on nude dancing in Destin
Should the city have settled with The Oasis?
No. Under no circumstances should a strip club be allowed to open in Destin.
No. I think the city could have negotiated better terms.
Yes. I don't want nude dancing in Destin, but the city can't legally ban strip clubs.
Yes. Bring on the half-naked women!
I don't care. A strip club won't last long in Destin.
