Snowbirds visit New Orleans
Happy Valentine's Day to all you Snowbirds, new and old! We now have a total of 2,189 members. This includes 1,616 from the United States, 535 from Canada, and 38 lifetime members. Of these, 589 are new members in 2009-10. Our last registration was on Monday, Feb. 8. If you're new to this area and wish to learn more about our Snowbird Club, feel free to attend one of our meetings starting at 8:30 and 11 a.m. every Tuesday at the Destin Community Center, 101 Stahlman Ave.
This past week the Soundsations entertained us. They performed a wonderful medley of song and dance. They will perform a concert on Valentine's Day at Northwest Florida State College-Niceville campus at 2 p.m. with seating at 1:30 p.m. This concert is a benefit for the college arts program. We raised $8,000 last year for this great cause. So if you're looking for a Valentine's Day event for you and your honey, here is a great chance to see the Soundsations group. Tickets are $8 and are available at the door starting Sunday at 12:30.
Our bus trip to New Orleans this past week was a success. Between the Mardi Gras parade and the Super Bowl mania, all had fun. Several people on the trip wore their New Orleans Saints shirts and Mardi Gras beads to our Tuesday meeting.
The Friendship Club will meet this week in Sundestin at the Endless Bar and Grill. On Feb. 23 they will meet at the Black Pearl restaurant. This club has started many friendships. Snowbirds Gracie and Ron met through the Friendship Club more than a decade ago and have been together since. Who needs computer dating?
Funology meets at 10 a.m. Mondays at The Roost. This includes sing-alongs, skits and quizzes, and is hosted by Pat McAlpin. The Quilting Club meets on Wednesday, Feb. 17 at the old Destin library on Stahlman Avenue. It will be held between 2 and 4 p.m.
All scheduled casino trips to Biloxi are now sold out. The next poker night will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Feb. 22 at the Embassy Suites. For more information, call Bill Pasel at 650-4972.
The Jack Kline Cancer Tournament was a success, raising $1,500 for this great cause. Participants enjoyed plenty of sunshine and great fun, and a good time was had by all.
