Lucy Laverne Black                                                                                             

Lucy “Laverne” Black 88, of Destin, Fla., passed away at her home on Feb. 12, 2012.  She was born on Dec. 3, 1923, in Chambers County, Alabama, to B. V. and Lula Sims. She was one of nine children.  Lucy was Catholic by faith and a member of the Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Destin. Before her retirement she was the owner operator of the Capri by the Sea Motel in Destin.  She loved traveling and most of all loved being with her family. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings.

Survivors include her eight children, Wayne Gath of Destin, James (Gina) Gath of Reading, Ma. Bonnie Sue Guptill and Jack Merrill of Billerica, Ma. Karen Gath and Michael Mason of Lowell, Ma., Gerald (Martha) of Dunstable, Ma., Rebecca (Garry) Fuller of Dracut, Ma., Dennis (Nancy) Gath of Tewksbury, Ma., and Lorna Faye Gath of Salem, New Hampshire; 19 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Mass will be conducted at 11 a.m. Feb. 16 at the Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 307 Beach Drive in Destin, with Father Bob Morris officiating.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to her family in Alabama, and a warm loving appreciation for her dearest friend, Louis Head of Rye, New Hampshire.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorial donations be made to the Corpus Christi Catholic Church in memory of Lucy Laverne Black.
