The Hooters Fishing Report for Feb. 14-17, 2012
Pier/Surf
With overcast skies and mild temps, the water is clear and calm at the Okaloosa Island Pier. In the last couple of days, anglers have pulled bonito, sheepshead and an even a mullet.
Inshore/Bay
Redfish and sheepshead are showing up around the Destin Bridge and jetties and are biting well on live shrimp and fiddler crabs. Speckled trout is still being caught on the grass flats in 5- to 7-feet of water. Live shrimp, finger mullet or pinfish work well for bait as well as a jig and grub. When the temperature drops, look for the trout to move into the deep holes. Some reports are coming in of trout caught in the bayous to the east of the 331 Bridge.
Offshore/Bottom
Bottom fishing is still good for catches of triggerfish, mingo, white snapper, and amberjack. Live bait fished over a wreck works well for amberjack. A few wahoo, yellowfin tuna and blackfin tuna have been caught near the rigs offshore. Butterfly jigs work well for tuna.
