Boating seminars
Seminars, sponsored by UWF and the Fort Walton Sail and Power Squadron, a unit of the United States Power Squadrons, include Boating Security on Jan. 12 and Boat Handling Under Power Jan. 26. Zen priest to speak
“How to Taste a Strawberry When a Tiger Is Chasing You” is the title of a talk to be given by The Rev. Teijo Munnich of Asheville, N.C., at 7 p.m. Jan. 13 at the Coastal Branch Library in south Walton County.

Seminar
Building Engineering-Consultants, Inc. will present a seminar, Maintenance Plans and Reserve Studies, from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Jan. 16 at the Destin Community Center. Cost is $10/person.

Walton County Master Gardener course
Applications are being accepted for the new Master Gardener class to be held from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. each Thursday Feb. 5 through April 23 at the Walton County Extension Office, 732 N. 9th Street in DeFuniak Springs.
Space is limited. A charge of $95 covers books and other supplies. In addition to classroom work, students are expected to participate in community volunteer projects.

Community Health Fair
Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast will host its sixth annual community Health Fair from 7:30 to 11 a.m. Jan. 24 in the main colonnade of the hospital with free health screenings and information on health issues.
Walk-ins are welcome, and there is no need to pre-register. For accurate results on the glucose and cholesterol screenings, please do not eat or drink anything besides water eight hours prior to the test. Call 278-3600 or visit www.sacredheartemerald.org

Media and Merchandise Auction
Emerald Coast Advertising Federation will relive the ‘80s at the  Awesome ‘80s Media and Merchandise Auction from 6 to 9 p.m. Jan. 29 at Hard Rock Café in Destin.
Enjoy music, a silent and live auction, food and drinks. In addition to traditional auction items, the auction will feature advertising space from local and regional publications.

UWF open house

Flash Boot Camp Course

Destin YMCA

new4Heartfelt Walkabout
Join Sacred Heart Foundation for a “Heartfelt Walkabout” from 6 to 9 p.m. Feb. 4 in the Magnolia Ballroom at the Village of Baytowne Wharf in Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort. Guests will enjoy signature dishes from area restaurants, wine tastings, live entertainment, and silent and live auctions. All proceeds from the event will benefit Sacred Heart Foundation’s capital campaign to raise $5 million for the expansion of heart and vascular services at Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast.
Tickets are $99 per person and may be purchased at Kitchenique in The Market Shops at Sandestin, Burnt Pine Golf Club, and Sacred Heart Foundation.

Camellia Workshop/Open House
The 10th Annual Camellia Workshop/Open House, presented by the Greater Fort Walton Beach Camellia Society, will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Feb. 7 at the Okaloosa County Extension Service Building, 127 Hollywood Ave. in Fort Walton Beach.
Attendees may drop by the free workshop anytime to get hands-on instruction from local Camellia society members. Camellia plants will be available for purchase.

Destin Woman’s Club fundraiser
The Destin Woman’s Club presents Shirley Simpson on stage as Minnie Pearl from 2 to 4 p.m. Feb. 14 at Grace Lutheran Church, 4325 W. Commons Drive in Destin. Reception follows to meet “Minnie.” Proceeds will benefit Fisher House in Fort Walton Beach.

Cox Cablethon
The 37th annual Cox Communications Cablethon benefiting Covenant Hospice will be held Feb. 27-28 on Channel 6.
The Cablethon may also be viewed globally this year via the Internet so providing sponsors even more value for their sponsorships. All of the money raised from the Cablethon goes toward unfunded programs in Okaloosa and Walton Counties such as indigent care, bereavement and children’s programs.

 Parrot Head Club Chili Cook-off
The fourth annual Emerald Coast Parrot Head Club Chili Cook-Off to benefit Relay for Life will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Feb. 28 at Fudpucker’s in Destin. Cost is $10/person to sample, vote on favorite and participate in silent auction.
Cost to enter your chili is $10 for club members through Feb. 27; $20 at the door and $30 for non-members through Feb. 27, $40 at the door. Prize awarded.
