Larmon Ray Salmon

Larmon Ray Salmon, 78, of Destin, formally of Houston, Texas, passed away Aug. 28, 2010. He was born Aug. 6, 1932, in New Orleans to Charles H. and A. Pearl Salmon. He had been a resident of the local area for the last 19 years.  He attended St. John’s Lutheran School, Warren Eastern High School and graduated from Louisiana State University and was always an avid Tiger fan.  Larmon honorably served his country in the Army for two years as a guided missile unit commander in Maryland. After his discharge he, his wife and son moved back to New Orleans where he started his career as an insurance broker. In 1969 the family moved to Houston where he was president of Bailey, Martin, and Fay Insurance Brokers. In 1989 he retired and two years later moved to Destin.

Larmon loved people. He volunteered as a flight medicine technician for 15 years at Eglin Hospital. He was in the Institute of Senior Professionals at the Northwest Florida College and was a member of the active Retired Men of Destin for several years. Larmon was Methodist by faith and a member of First United Methodist Church of Fort Walton Beach where he attended until his death. Larmon’s greatest love was the Lord, his family and his fellow man.  He never met a stranger and often would be the first to greet people. He also was a volunteer in the Veteran’s Hospital in Houston and mentor for Children at Risk at Destin Elementary.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Gloria. Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Diana; children, Mark Salmon (Debbie) of Austin, Cynthia Hinton (Ben) of Destin and Bruce Salmon of Austin; grandchildren, Rory, Danae, Ellar, and Andrew; and brother, Charles H. Salmon Jr.

Family will receive friends at a visitation from 10 to 11 a.m. Sept. 2 at the First United Methodist Church of Fort Walton Beach. A celebration of life service will follow at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Michael Sigler officiating.  Following services, the inurnment will be in Destin Memorial Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the First United Methodist Church of Fort Walton Beach building fund in memory of Larmon R. Salmon.
