Tickets selling out for upcoming snowbird events
Activities are in full swing and the pace is picking up! From 5-8 p.m. next Saturday, Jan. 28, we will have the first party of 2012 when the “Pirates of the (Destin) Caribbean” will capture the Seascape Conference Center. Chuck Lawson will be on hand to entertain with island style music, and food will be provided by 98 Bar-B-Que. Tickets are going fast.
The Fashion Show “A Picnic by the Sea”, is sold out. Tickets are still available for the Soundsations Concert at 2 p.m. Feb. 12 at the NWFSC Fine Arts Auditorium. This is a benefit concert for the Performing Arts program at the college.
All our outdoor activity coordinators are thrilled with the great weather. Play tennis, go fishing or golfing. The upcoming golf events are: Ladies Scramble at Bluewater Bay Feb. 15 ($40 golf with cart and lunch) and our annual Charity Tournament Feb. 22 for cancer research in memory of Jack Kline and Lise Walsh ($50 at Emerald Bay).
Take advantage of the beautiful Emerald Coast and join a Nordic pole walking group on the beach. From 10-11 a.m. beginning Wednesday, Feb. 1, meet in the parking lot of Captain Dave’s on the Gulf. For more information contact Lynda Simmons, 654-7882.
The Community Center also has table tennis available to the Destin Snowbirds from 2:30-5 p.m. Tuesdays and 9-11 a.m. Thursdays. Anyone interested in playing or learning Mahjonng is invited to sign the list on the bulletin board.
The Friendship Club has been an important part of the Destin Snowbird Club for many years. This group of single people meets for lunch at a different restaurant following the 11 a.m. meeting. Next week they will be at La Famiglia a great Italian restaurant on Harbor Boulevard. For the past four years Joann Benesh has coordinated the luncheons. At the first event of his year attendance was 27, including several new members. Other activities will be planned to meet the needs of the group during the season.
Plans are in the making for future parties from 3-6 p.m. Tuesdays at the Seascape Conference Center. Entry at the door will be $5 per person, $1 drinks. The first date is planned for Jan. 31, more details to follow.
Finally this week I am happy to respond to my first reader email request. Rick and Sherry are local “Destinites” who read the snowbird news. They are planning a trip this spring from Destin to Nova Scotia, Canada via Washington DC and New Brunswick. They would like to meet someone from the Maritimes willing to share some information about the region with them.
As of Jan. 9 our membership has a total of five members from NS, two from NB and four from PEI. I hope some of you are willing to come forward and contact these folks. I will post their home telephone number on our bulletin board, or you can contact me at the meeting for more information. This is a great opportunity for some of our members to share their home with members of our host community.
Registrations are held each Monday at the Community Center from 1-3 p.m. with the final date for this year, Feb. 6. For further information and contact names for activities, visit www.destinsnowbirds.org.
