Docks Déjà vu: From sharks to scamp, a flurry of fish on Thursday (PHOTOS)
It was almost like old times down at the docks Thursday with boats coming in left and right.
Boats were bringing in everything from mackerel, dolphin, grouper and even a shark hit the docks.
Capt. Steve Land on the Sportsman II was one of the first in. He and his anglers from Missouri pulled in three king mackerel and three Spanish mackerel.
One of the kings weighed about 15 to 20-pounds, and all the guys onboard wanted to pose with the fish.
“We had two others that hit at the same time” as the big one did, Capt. Land said.

He said he had 80-pound test line snap on him twice and that he lost one of his favorite lures.
“The bite has picked up,” Land said.
Texas anglers on the Gulf Ranger with Capt. David Nettles pulled in a few king mackerel and hooked a spinner shark.
Folks on the Kelly Girl with Capt. Jimmy Miles and deckhand Pat Meyers reeled in king mackerel and bonito.
“We got a sailfish up … and got one jump out of him,” before he spit the hook, Meyers said. The sailfish was rather small, about 36 inches long.
“I think he was too small to eat the bait,” Meyers said. “He tried but couldn’t do it. But we had fun, and that’s what it’s all about.”
Texas and Tennessee anglers on the Anastasia with Capt. Tony Davis brought in a smorgasbord. They had a 25-pound cobia on the racks, three dolphin, two fat king mackerel, a red grouper, triggerfish and a pile of white snapper.
Eight-year-old Mason Briggs of Mt. Juliet, Tenn., landed one of the big king mackerel. “I just kept pulling and pulling,” Briggs said. “I almost got bit by it” once the fish was on the boat, he said.
Atlanta and Texas anglers on the Scamp with Capt. Dennis Kendrick pulled in five triggerfish, lane snapper, Spanish mackerel and bonito.
Louisiana anglers on the Huntress with Capt. Mike Graef reeled in seven king mackerel and a head — a mackerel head. “A barracuda was the culprit,” said deckhand Groovy.
Capt. Craig Mann on the Gulf Winds came in with a nice catch of king mackerel, mingo and white snapper. Capt. Mann said he had a shark trip planned for later in the evening.
Capt. Jason Steele on the Barracuda brought in a shark on a morning trip. Jeff Bennett of Fort Worth, Texas, landed a 100-pound sandbar shark.
“He fought hard,” Bennett said. “It took about 20 to 30 minutes,” to get him to the boat where deckhand Josh Olis gaffed him. “It was a lot of fun, very exciting. At one point I thought I was going to give up.”
But he didn’t, and had a good time posing for photos at the docks.
In addition to the shark, the group from Texas pulled in a scamp, mingo, white snapper and triggerfish.
Capt. Ken Bolden on the Just B Cause came in with a nice spread of fish. They had a big red grouper on the racks, two gag grouper, three triggerfish and several white snapper and mingo.
Texas anglers on the Phoenix with Capt. Scott Robson filled the boards with three big king mackerel, dolphin and a couple of bonito.
Capt. Ed Shields on the Silver Lining pulled a good catch. They had six king mackerel, a grouper and a couple of lane snapper. Deckhand Joe Quantro said they had a sailfish jump about six times next to the boat, but it was small.
Things are looking and sounding very fishy, which is a good thing. Book a trip and come on down.
See you at the docks.
