Dont shoo Snowbirds from the links

While playing in a local golf scramble a few weeks ago in Crestview the tournament host announced that the next few Tuesdays would see the course hosting some Snowbird outings.

One local golfer yelled out "Why do they have to use our golf course? Send them somewhere else."

With about 100 to 120 Snowbirds at each outing, that guarantees the course between $4,000 and $5,000 they otherwise might not have gotten.

Snowbirds contribute about $10 million to the local economy on winter rentals alone. Add to that another approximately $3 million on food, golf and other entertainment. So, yes, we do provide an appreciable winter stimulus for the local economy.

Special thanks to all the golf courses who accommodate the Snowbirds and our apologies especially to the Fort Walton Beach members who struggle to get tee times because of us.

Last Thursday, I joined 25 other Snowbirds and guests fishing on the Swoop. We caught an assortment of mingos, triggerfish, grouper, amberjack and, of course, those quickly-returned red snapper. Can't wait till April 15 when we can keep a couple.

Finally, special recognition to two groups.

Thanks to Sandra Grabczynski and her group of 75 crafters who create thousands of knit, crocheted and sewn articles every Monday with the Fort Walton Beach Snowbirds to be given to hospitals and local charities. Bravo!

Another group worthy of mention that locals and Snowbirds alike can support is the Emerald Coast Blazers baseball team of 13-year-old boys. After winning the north Florida baseball championships they need your help to assist with travel and equipment costs. Please visit their Web site at emeraldcoastblazers.com to learn about the team and their fundraisers.

Send article ideas to nancyandbrian@hotmail.com.

Brian Cosgrove and his wife, Nancy, are Snowbirds from Canada.
