Man arrested for trying to steal cough syrup from Destin Walmart

DESTIN -- Okaloosa County Sheriff's deputies arrested a man who tried to steal a bottle of Delsym cough syrup from the Destin Walmart.

A Walmart loss prevention officer provided deputies with a sworn affidavit stating that he saw the suspect pick a bottle of Delsym cough syrup from the shelf and remove it from the box. He then went to the boys clothing section, where he stuck the bottle in his jacket pocket.

He then left the store without paying. He was confronted by the loss prevention officer, who escorted him back into the store and called the Sheriff's Office.

When the suspect was questioned by deputies he gave his cousin's name, which did not validate in the deputies' computer system. Confronted with this information, he confessed to giving a false name, and gave the deputies his real name.

The man had been issued a Georgia driver's license which he did not have on him, but had no current address.

Delsym cough syrup contains dextromorphan, a cough suppressant which acts as a disassociative hallucinogenic drug when taken in high doses, similar to ketamine and PCP.

The man was arrested, and charged with petit theft and giving a false name while lawfully detained.
